Dear MapHistors,

The enquiry below is totally out of my scope. Would anybody like to be king enough to answer Jon Haskell's query DIRECTLY to him (ie not to me)?

Many thanks,
 Catherine Delano Smith

Dr. Delano-Smith,

For sometime, we have been trying to verify the existence of a map cited by a number of authors writing of a possible 12th century incursion by Celtic peoples in North America. The map cited is a Ribiero map ca. 1519 or 1529 with the notation tierra de los gales in the Gulf of Mexico near the city of Mobile, Alabama.

I am not sure if this is a "urban legend" story fabricated by overzealous proponents of the Madoc theory/legend, or if it in fact existed. Would you have any knowledge of such a map?

Best regards,

Jon
